Quick Answer
For serious long-range competition and PRS shooting, the Zeiss LRP S5 is the clear choice with its first-focal-plane reticle and massive elevation travel. For versatile hunting and general long-range use, the Zeiss Conquest V6 offers excellent light transmission and a fine illuminated dot at a more accessible price.
Key Differences at a Glance
The Conquest V6 and LRP S5 serve different shooting disciplines. The Conquest V6 is a 2-12x50 scope with a 30mm main tube and a second-focal-plane reticle, ideal for hunters who need a wide field of view at low magnification and precise aiming at higher power.
The LRP S5 is a 3-18x50 first-focal-plane scope with a 34mm main tube, designed for long-range precision. Its reticle subtensions remain accurate at any magnification, and the larger tube allows for more elevation adjustment—critical for engaging targets beyond 1,000 yards.
Reticle and Magnification: What Matters for Your Shooting
The Conquest V6's second-focal-plane reticle keeps the reticle size constant, which is preferable for hunters who shoot at varying distances without needing to hold over. The illuminated dot is extremely fine, aiding precision in low light.
The LRP S5's first-focal-plane reticle scales with magnification, ensuring holdovers and windage corrections are always correct. This is essential for long-range shooters who dial or hold at different magnifications.
Trade-Offs to Consider
- Magnification Range: Conquest V6 offers 2-12x, ideal for close-to-medium hunting shots. LRP S5 offers 3-18x, better for long-range precision where higher magnification is needed. Choose magnification based on your typical shooting distances.
- Reticle Plane: Conquest V6 has a second-focal-plane reticle, keeping the reticle size constant. LRP S5 has a first-focal-plane reticle, which scales with magnification for accurate holdovers. FFP is essential for long-range holdover shooting; SFP is simpler for hunting.
- Elevation Travel: LRP S5 provides massive elevation travel for targets up to 1,500 yards. Conquest V6 has standard elevation, sufficient for most hunting distances. For extreme long range, the LRP S5's extra travel is non-negotiable.
- Price: Conquest V6 is significantly more affordable (around $2,016) compared to the LRP S5 (around $3,957). Budget is a major factor; decide if the LRP S5's features justify the cost.
